Howard was born in Phoenix, Arizona and lived there for 19 years. He then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. He has an Associates Degree in Electronics from Laney College in Oakland, CA and additional college studies in History & Psychology at California State College Hayward, CA. Howard was also stationed in Korea in 1970 to 1971 as US Army Medic.
While living in Alameda California and after several careers (including having his own business), Howard began gambling at the local horse-racing venues. In 2008 he moved to Portland, Oregon and began his long term recovery from his gambling addiction. After joining a 12 step group, Howard has abstained since March of 2008. During his recovery, He has been Chairman of Columbia Willamette Intergroup Area 2G Oregon & SW Washington and is currently secretary of a Gamblers Anonymous meeting. In April of 2015 Howard became a Certified Recovery Mentor and Certified Gambling Recovery Mentor at ACCBO. In June of 2015, Howard began working as a gambling recovery peer mentor contracted with Voices of Problem Gambling Recovery.
Howard brings years of recovery and life experience as he joins MHAO as an Older Adult Peer Support Specialist.
